What Cuento is
Cuento is a matching service that connects readers who live near each other into small book clubs. We match you based on your location and reading preferences, then introduce your circle over email. After the introduction, the circle is self-organized.
Some Cuento circles are run by independent creators or communities ("organizers") who use our platform to offer their own branded reading circles. When you join through a creator's link or subdomain, your matching pool is scoped to that community, and the creator receives a share of the match fee. Cuento provides the matching, payments, and infrastructure; the creator sets the price and curates their community.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to use Cuento. By creating an account, you confirm that you are 18 or older.
Payment
Cuento is paid as a one-time fee per match, charged after we find your circle. All prices are in Canadian dollars. For readers on cuento.app the fee is $15 CAD; creator-run communities set their own fee between $10 and $50 CAD. Either way, the exact amount is shown on your dashboard before payment. On creator-run communities, Cuento retains 25% as a platform fee and the creator receives 75%.
There are no subscriptions and no recurring charges. If you choose to rematch into a different circle, your first rematch is free; subsequent rematches are charged at the current match price.
When your circle doesn't meet
About a week after we introduce your circle, we send every paid member a short email asking whether the meeting happened. If two or more members report that nobody showed up, we cancel the circle and give every paid member a free rematch. You don't need to do anything. The rematch shows up on your dashboard.
Refunds
If something went wrong and a free rematch isn't the right fix, you can request a refund through the form at cuento.app/refund-request. We review every request manually and respond within a few business days. We do refund in good faith when we couldn't deliver, including if we don't match you in a reasonable time, or your circle was cancelled and a rematch isn't a fit.
Your account
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. Use accurate information when you sign up: your name, neighbourhood, and reading preferences are shared with your circle members when matched.
Be a good neighbour
Cuento connects real people in real neighbourhoods. We expect members to treat each other with respect. Don't use Cuento to spam, harass, or mislead other members.
We reserve the right to remove accounts that violate these expectations, without refund.
What we're responsible for
We do our best to match you with compatible readers nearby. We can't guarantee you'll love your circle, that the group will meet regularly, or that everyone will finish the book. (Nobody ever finishes the book.)
If your circle isn't a fit, you can request a rematch from your dashboard. The first rematch is free. Subsequent rematches are charged at the current match price.
Your data
See our Privacy Policy for how we handle your information. The short version: we collect the minimum, we don't sell it, and you can delete your account anytime.
Changes
We may update these terms. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know by email. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms.
