A small Commercial Drive book club, matched by taste.

The first readers in Commercial Drive are signing up now. Join them and you'll be in the neighbourhood's first circle: a handful of people nearby who share your taste.

Commercial Drive is Vancouver's bohemian heart, a lively, Italian-rooted strip of cafés, patios and independent shops that has always drawn artists, activists and talkers. Few corners of the city are better made for readers who like their conversations long and their espresso strong.

Reading in Commercial Drive.

Few Vancouver streets hold as many bookshops within walking distance of each other. People's Co-op Bookstore, owned by its members since 1945, leans toward politics, Indigenous writing and global perspectives while still stocking plenty for general readers. Pulpfiction Books sells new and used titles further along, and Spartacus Books, a volunteer-run collective, sits almost across the street from Canterbury Tales, a new-and-used shop on the Drive since 1996.

Café Calabria, opened in 1976 and decorated with reproduction Roman statues, is the Drive's old-school espresso bar, and Grandview Park, midway along the street, is where the neighbourhood sits outside on warm evenings.

Away from the Drive, Grandview-Woodland's quieter streets run east toward Victoria Drive and Nanaimo Street. Britannia Community Services Centre on Napier Street brings together schools, a community centre, a pool, a rink and the Britannia branch of the Vancouver Public Library, and Victoria Park and Woodland Park are small local greens. The Adanac bike route crosses the area east to west, and Commercial–Broadway station, where the Expo and Millennium Lines meet the 99 B-Line, sits where the Drive crosses Broadway.
