The first readers in UBC are signing up now. Join them and you'll be in the neighbourhood's first circle: a handful of people nearby who share your taste.

UBC sits at the forested tip of the peninsula, a student-heavy university enclave ringed by beaches, gardens and Pacific Spirit Park. Intellectually curious and full of newcomers, it's a natural gathering spot for readers who love ideas, discovery and a good campus café.

Reading in UBC.

UBC sits at the forested tip of the Point Grey peninsula, outside the City of Vancouver, so it has no Vancouver Public Library branch. It has something rarer instead: UBC Library welcomes the public, and anyone can visit the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, built around the core of the 1925 Main Library, without a card. Community borrower cards are available for those who want to take books home.

The UBC Bookstore at University Boulevard and East Mall is the campus's main bookshop. The Museum of Anthropology, Nitobe Memorial Garden and the UBC Botanical Garden give a circle memorable places to visit together between books.

For residents, the University Neighbourhoods Association runs Wesbrook Community Centre in Wesbrook Place on south campus. Pacific Spirit Regional Park surrounds the campus with forest trails, and the 99 B-Line and the R4 RapidBus both end at the UBC bus exchange, which makes campus easier to reach than its location suggests.

How do I join a book club in UBC?

Sign up on Cuento, pick UBC as your neighbourhood, and share your reading taste. We'll match you with a handful of readers nearby. Free to sign up. You only pay $15 when we find your circle.

Can a UBC circle meet on campus?

Yes. Campus has many possibilities, from the public spaces in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre to cafés near the bus exchange and Wesbrook Community Centre on south campus. Libraries ask for quiet, so a café or lounge may suit discussion better. After the introduction email, the circle chooses its own time and place.

How many people are in a UBC book club?

Each reading circle has four to eight people. Small enough that everyone talks, big enough that it still works if someone can't make it one month.

What do UBC book clubs read?

Each circle decides together. Cuento matches you based on shared reading taste, so your group will already have common ground. Popular genres in UBC include Literary Fiction, Young Adult, Dystopian.

Where do UBC reading groups meet?

Most circles meet at a local café in UBC. Cuento suggests a first meeting spot, but your group picks what works best. The whole point is that everyone is within walking distance.
